Solar Panel Grants in Dorset: What’s Available in 2026?

Solar panel grants in Dorset have changed significantly over the past couple of years. Schemes have opened, closed, been extended and rebranded, and it can be genuinely difficult to keep track of what is actually available right now.
In Brief
The main solar grants in Dorset are the Warm Homes Local Grant (up to £15,000 for households earning under £36,000 with an EPC rating of D or below) and ECO4 (for those on qualifying means-tested benefits, and only if the home doesn’t have a gas boiler). Most homeowners won’t qualify for either, but everyone benefits automatically from 0% VAT on solar installations, confirmed until at least March 2027.

Warm Homes: Local Grant
The Warm Homes: Local Grant is the most significant grant available to Dorset homeowners in 2026. It sits within the government’s wider Warm Homes Plan and can fund up to £15,000 of energy efficiency improvements at no cost to the homeowner, which can include solar panel installation.
In Dorset, the scheme is administered locally through Healthy Homes Dorset, part of Dorset Council. The main eligibility criteria are:
- Household income of £36,000 per year or less (the threshold varies slightly by local authority area, so it is worth checking the current figure for your postcode)
- Property must have an EPC rating of D, E, F or G
- The property must be privately owned or privately rented
The grant does not need to be repaid, and in some cases it can cover the full cost of a solar installation depending on the property and its circumstances.
If you think you may be eligible, the best starting point is the Healthy Homes Dorset website or a call to Dorset Council directly. Do not rely on third-party eligibility checkers, as these are often run by lead generation companies rather than the scheme administrators themselves.
Worth knowing: The 0% VAT saving (covered below) applies on top of any grant you receive, further reducing the cost of any elements you do pay for.
ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation)
ECO4 has been extended until 31 December 2026. It is a government-mandated scheme under which large energy suppliers are required to fund energy efficiency improvements in low-income and fuel-poor households.
The eligibility criteria are stricter than the Warm Homes Local Grant:
- You or someone in your household must be receiving a qualifying means-tested benefit, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credits or similar
- The property must have an EPC rating of D or below
There is an important restriction specific to solar panels under ECO4 that is not always clearly explained: solar PV is only an eligible measure where the property’s main heating system is a heat pump, electric storage heating or another form of electric heating. If your home has a gas boiler, you will not be able to get solar panels through ECO4. This is why solar accounts for a relatively small proportion of ECO4 measures nationally.
If you do qualify on all counts, ECO4 can fund solar installation at no cost to you. Applications go through your energy supplier or a registered installer, who will manage the process on your behalf.
Worth knowing: ECO4 funding is first come, first served and the scheme closes at the end of 2026 with no confirmed successor. If you believe you qualify, it is worth checking sooner rather than later.
0% VAT on Solar Panel Installation
This is not a grant, but it is a meaningful financial benefit that applies to almost every homeowner in Dorset regardless of income.
Since April 2022, domestic solar panel installations have been zero-rated for VAT. Before this change, VAT was charged at 5%. On a typical 4kW solar system costing around £7,000, the saving is approximately £350 at the old rate. On larger systems or those including battery storage, the saving is more significant.
The 0% rate is currently confirmed until at least 31 March 2027. It applies to the panels, inverter, battery storage and the installation labour itself.
This is one of the most straightforward financial benefits available and applies automatically when you use an MCS-certified installer. You do not need to apply for anything.
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
The Smart Export Guarantee is an ongoing income stream rather than an upfront grant. Under the scheme, your energy supplier pays you for any surplus electricity your solar panels generate and export back to the grid.
Export rates vary by supplier and tariff, but typically sit between 4p and 15p per kWh. The rate you receive depends on which supplier and tariff you choose, and you are free to switch between SEG tariffs in the same way you can switch energy tariffs generally.
To access SEG payments, your installation must be MCS certified, which all Ace Energy installations are. Your installer will provide the MCS certificate as part of the handover documentation, and you can use this to sign up with your chosen energy supplier.
The SEG is worth factoring into your payback calculations. For a typical Dorset household generating more electricity than it uses during the day, SEG income can add several hundred pounds per year to the financial case for going solar, particularly when combined with battery storage that shifts your usage patterns.

Switch Together Dorset
Switch Together Dorset (formerly Solar Together Dorset) is a group-buying initiative run by Dorset Council, using collective purchasing power to negotiate competitive prices with vetted installers. It is not a grant, but it can reduce the upfront cost compared to going to the open market alone.
The scheme runs in phases, and registration for the current 2025/26 phase has now closed. If you missed this round, it is worth registering your interest for future phases via the Dorset Council website.
One thing to be aware of: the installer is selected through the group scheme’s procurement process, so you will not be choosing your own installer. For homeowners who prefer to select a local, independent installer they can speak to directly, going to the open market separately may suit you better.
What If You Do Not Qualify for Any Grants?
The honest answer is that most Dorset homeowners will not qualify for the means-tested grants. The Warm Homes Local Grant and ECO4 are both targeted at lower-income households, and the combined eligible population is a minority of total homeowners.
For everyone else, the financial case for solar still holds up. The 0% VAT rate, the SEG income and the reduction in electricity bills typically produce a payback period of 6 to 9 years on a well-designed system, with panels that carry a 25-year performance warranty. At current energy prices in Dorset, a typical household can expect to save between £700 and £1,000 per year on electricity bills.

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover solar panels?
No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants toward the cost of heat pumps and biomass boilers. It does not cover solar panels. If you heat your home with oil or LPG and are considering switching to a heat pump, it is worth knowing that from 21 July 2026 the BUS grant increases to £9,000 for eligible off-grid properties, up from the standard £7,500. Solar panels and a heat pump can work very well together, so it may be worth exploring both at the same time.
