How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump works by transferring heat from the air or ground into your home. Even in colder months, there’s still heat available in the environment, and a heat pump extracts this energy, boosts it using a compressor, and then distributes it to heat your home and hot water. Unlike traditional gas boilers, heat pumps don’t burn fuel – they simply move existing heat, making them much more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air, while ground source heat pumps extract heat from pipes buried underground. Both systems run on electricity but produce far more energy than they consume, making them an excellent alternative to fossil fuel heating.
Why replace your boiler for a heat pump?
-
Lower Fuel Bills
Heat Pumps offer central heating which is cheaper to run than traditional systems, and they do not require gas connections or inconvenient fuel deliveries.
-
Greater Safety
Heat Pumps deliver your heating whilst reducing the danger to users, as Heat Pumps do not use flammable or asphyxiating fuels at the point of heating.
-
Eco-friendly
Heat Pumps have a positive impact on your carbon footprint. Although they require some electric to run this is less than is used by traditional boilers. To encourage renewable systems, the Government offers a £7,500 grant towards the total cost of your installation. Our qualified team are on hand to guide you through the process.
-
Low Maintenance
Heat Pumps are a reliable heat source due to less moving parts than traditional combustion systems. A Heat Pumps requires servicing once a year to maintain its efficiency, extend its useful life and uphold your manufacturer’s warranty. £7,500 Government Grant
As we are MCS accredited heat pump installers, you’ll be able to claim £7,500 for your heat pump installation, plus you’ll pay no VAT.
How much is a heat pump?

The cost of a heat pump can vary
An air source heat pump installation typically starts from around £10,000, depending on the size of your property and what’s already in place. To qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, you’ll also need a hot water cylinder installed alongside the heat pump if you don’t already have one, which affects the overall cost. With the £7,500 grant applied and zero VAT to pay on the installation, the net cost to most homeowners is considerably lower than the headline figure.
To get an accurate idea of the price for your home, it’s best to arrange a free survey with a heat pump installer who can outline the full costs. As an MCS-certified installer, we can also help you secure the grant to make your switch more affordable.
Are heat pumps worth it?

Absolutely! Here’s why:
- Lower energy bills – Heat pumps are highly efficient and can significantly cut heating costs.
- Eco-friendly – They reduce carbon emissions, making them a greener alternative to gas or oil heating.
- Long lifespan – Heat pumps last around 20 years or more with proper maintenance.
- Government incentives – Financial support can make installation more affordable.
- Year-round comfort – Many heat pumps can also provide cooling in summer, keeping your home comfortable all year round.

Up to Date EPC
Please note: as of April 2026, if your EPC is out of date you no longer need to apply for a new one to be eligible for the BUS grant. Alternative evidence such as a recent utility bill or photos of your existing heating system can be used instead. Where a valid EPC does exist, this will still be used as the primary evidence.
-
Measurements
From measurements or floorplans, our team calculate the heat loss of your house. This is the energy lost through windows, doors, floors etc that your Pump will need to replace in order to maintain the warmth inside. This also ensures we offer you the correct size Pump and heat emitters.
